Finding Humility at the End of Modernity

Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental thinker and activist, a leader in the International Forum on Globalisation, and of the Slow Food Movement. Director of Navdanya and of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, and a tireless crusader for farmers’, peasants’, and women’s rights, she is the author and editor of a score of influential books. Shiva is the recipient of over twenty international awards, including the Right Livelihood Award (1993); the Medal of the Presidency of the Italian Republic (1998); the Horizon 3000 Award (Austria, 2001); the John Lennon-Yoko Ono Grant for Peace (2008); the Save the World Award (2009); the Sydney Peace Prize (2010); the Calgary Peace Prize (2011); and the Thomas Merton Award (2011). She was the Fukuoka Grand Prize Laureate in 2012.

Dougald Hine is a social thinker, writer and speaker. After an early career as a BBC journalist, he co founded organizations including the Dark Mountain Project and a school called HOME. He has collaborated with scientists, artists and activists, serving as a leader of artistic development at Riksteatern (Sweden’s national theatre) and as an associate of the Centre for Environment and Development Studies at Uppsala University. At Work in the Ruins concludes the work that began with Uncivilization: The Dark Mountain Manifesto (2009), co-written with Paul Kingsnorth, and is his second title with Chelsea Green Publishing, following the anthology Walking on Lava (2017).

Matthew Derr is a philanthropy, education, and publishing leader. He directs the editorial program at Chelsea Green Publishing of Rizzoli International. For nearly a decade, before being recognized as President Emeritus in 2021, he led Sterling College with its focus on ecological thinking and action. In 2010, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education awarded Derr with the organization's Chief Executive Leadership for his work helping to revive Antioch College, one of the United States historic progressive institutions. He is a trustee of the Foundation for Convivial Living.
